Craft
Chikankari is a delicate hand embroidery technique from Lucknow. It is commonly done on textiles such as cotton, georgette, crepe, chiffon, silks etc.The stitches include tepchi (long-running stitch), bakhiya (shadow work), murri( rice-shaped french knots) and jali work. The type of stitch during the embroidery enhances the designs. The process involves block printing of the designs and patterns with washable dyes on a stitched garment, followed by the embroidery that traces those printed patterns with different stitches. Later the garment is washed to remove the printed dyes, bleached, stiffened and lastly ironed. Originally, Chikankari embroidery was done using white threads on a white muslin cloth, whereas nowadays coloured threads of cotton or silk on coloured backgrounds are also used.
